Musical Adventure-Overtones

piano stingsSo I’ve begun my new musical adventure as a music student at university, I’m very excited to share my new discoveries with you. This week in my classical theory class we talked about overtones. I had never heard of the term before but the concept is quite exciting. A certain pitch is created by something vibrating so fast we perceive it as one note e.g piano strings. But because of this the vibrations produce overtones which means there are different notes within one single note!! My teacher demonstrated this by playing on a piano, a G on the top of the bass clef staff allowing us to get the pitch into our heads then he proceeded to play a C below the bass clef staff and when you let the note ring out you could hear the G in the C! My mind was blown.

Australia’s Unofficial Entry into Eurovision, Diamond Heist=COMPLETE

Drum roll please here is the final copy of Diamond heist and the lyrics!!

Diamond Heist

Verse

Partners in crime, thick as thieves,
can I trust you in time?
Or will you deceive?
I suppose it doesn’t matter, I can’t do this alone.
We will be a team until this heist is done and gone

Verse 2

Gather your disguise, refine your lies
choose your weapon with care
the stakes are high
the treasure’s in a vault, 30 feet under ground
accomplice to the end, complete the job at all costs

Verse 3

Partners in crime, thick as thieves,
can I trust you in time?
the stakes are high
the treasure’s in a vault, 30 feet under ground
accomplice to the end, complete the job at all costs

Chorus

100 carat stone, it’s crystal clear
Cut to shine brighter than the moon
Colour of the stars, it’s ours to take
This flawless paragon will be our reward

Bridge

Picking locks, bribing guards,
cracking safes, hacking logs
Jumping lasers, grappling hooks
swapping fakes, lying crooks

Thank you so much to everyone who contributed, a special thanks to my youth pastor who helped me fix my recording problems and agreed to sing it even though I made the melody difficult to sing 😛

Now please share it!!!
We have less than 24 hours to show Eurovision this, please share this either by the blog link or by sharing the soundcloud file on twitter or Eurovision’s official facebook page with the #MyEurovisionIdea

AUEE-Music update 6

I’ve added verse 2&3 melody added, intro added and variation in the bass line on the second time through the bridge. I also tried to turn everything down so you can hear the voice… The parts where it seems like nothing is really happening or building I’m hoping to fill with singers and drum stuff. Please give feedback 🙂

AUEE-Music Update 5 bridge, stucture, voice

The really bad sounding keyboard thing is meant to be a voice and since my computer can’t sing lyrics that’s the best it can do. Because of this the voice kind of blends into the back which is hopefully not what it will do. I got it in the structure of verse, verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, chorus, chorus. I just want to get the lyrics in now then I will tweak the arrangement a little, and hopefully add little transitional pieces in between sections.
Please check out my lyric update 5 and help me if you can 🙂

AUEE-Music update 4, more chords

Following one of my reader’s suggestions of the chorus being major I have added on a small section to the chord progression subtly changing it to major. The chord progression now goes;

|Am E |G#dim Am|
|Am E |Bdim Am|
|F     E |F      E|
|Am E |G#dim Am|

|F  Dm|Em  C|
|F  Dm|G     C|

Next I’ll integrate this into the music we already have. I may vary the lengths of these progressions depending on how the lyrics fit.

Don’t know what this post refers to? Check out this post

AUEE-Music update 3 + sax

I added two saxophones to the mix to fill out the sound. The choice of instrument to do this was a little bias for obvious reasons but I think it works well. What do you guys think? I’m behind schedule, trying hard to catch up.
Don’t forget to check out the other music and lyrics updates.

Forgot to mention, sorry for the sound quality, I’m using Sibelius and the instruments don’t always sound real. I hope to rectify this by recording real musicians.

Have no idea what this post is referring to? That’s ok check out this one

AUEE- Music update 2, Chord progression and bass line

So I got a SoundCloud account so I could show you all how I’m going with our song. So far I have the chord progression and bass line. I’d like to vary the rhythms a bit and it’s still clearly a working progression. Keep making suggestions and please critique it, if you don’t like something, or you do please tell me and explain why.
Remember to check out the other updates of the song.

**It is really difficult to hear the bass without headphones!!!**

AUEE- Lyric Update 3

Ok so one of my best friends, booklovers1, a friend who would want to be known as the elephant master and I are sitting down to try and write some lyrics…its not going so well. But we have a first draft for a chorus. Please critique it, add to it, anything!
“Partners in crime, thick as thieves,
can I trust you in time?
I suppose it doesn’t matter, I can’t do this alone.
We will be a team until this heist is done and gone.”

All you creative writers please help us. Remember the theme is about diamonds and a diamond heist. Check out my other lyric updates to find out the other themes.

AUEE-Music Update 1, chord progression

We have a chord progression!!! It took me forever and it ended up being a bit of an accident but I wrote, after a lesson on chords from my dad. In his 1/2 hour lecture I learnt more about chords then I did from taking two years of senior music at high school. So I put it in a minor key because it will match our diamond heist theme (see lyric updates for more info).

|Am E |G#dim Am|
|Am E |Bdim Am|
|F     E |F      E|
|Am E |G#dim Am|

Yay!! I’m so excited about it. I’m still working on the rhythm for it so hopefully I’ll be able to update you all soon. Please continue to contribute your suggestions and ideas, now that we have a kind of feel for the song it may be easier to suggest stuff.

Australia’s unofficial entry into Eurovision: week 2

evw2
Week 2!! We had some really cool suggestions last week so here is what we have so far:
-Instruments, you guys would like the violin, cello, (I’m not taking the orchestral bells seriously since I know who posted that) and glockenspiel. Before I put the theramin down for a yes I’ll have to do some research on how to notate it’s music and play it etc. I was also thinking if we went with violin we could totally go Australian and play it like a fiddle, bushwhackers style, what do you guys think? (The Bushwhackers were an Australian band that played bush band music, seriously look them up, they’re very cool)
-a pop song
-4/4 and a fast tempo
-while we don’t have any lyrics yet we’re so far thinking something ridiculous and fun
From this I’m thinking it should be in a major key, if you still really want a specific key let me know.

Ok so the questions for this week are:

  1. What kind of singers are we going to have and how many? (e.g. male, female, soprano, alto, tenor, bass etc.)
  2. What is our song about? So we need some lyrics, now we so far want some ridiculous and fun lyrics. As an example of something fun here is Greek’s entry into Eurovision this year. Before you freak out at the chorus I looked up the translation and am pretty sure they are satirically making fun of drink driving.

Just a reminder that if you have composed anything, like a chord progression, a small lick or a tiny melodic phrase, I’d be happy to work it in. If you’re not from Australia please feel free to join in it will still be fun. Also the song is not allowed to exceed 3 mins.

I can’t wait to hear your suggestions this week!
